Speaker: Steve Chapra
Place: Berkshire Botanical Garden, Classroom
Mtg. Coord.: Mary Howard
Dr. Steve Chapra explores the history, current status and future prospects for global water quality. Since prehistoric times little was done to address the deadly consequences of consuming contaminated water until the late 19th century, when American and European engineers collaborated to tackle urban pollution and waterborne illnesses. Another milestone occurred in the 1970’s with passage of the Clean Water Act, but climate change, urbanization and resurgence of waterborne diseases threaten any progress made. Dr. Chapra will outline these challenges and propose ways in which ordinary citizens can contribute to mitigating them.
